Tras una temporada en Pekín, Roy y Jessie, deciden viajar hasta Moscú en el mítico Transiberiano, el ferrocarril que une la Rusia europea con las provincias del lejano Oriente ruso, Mongolia y China. Aunque la gente que viaja en el gigantesco y algo tétrico tren es bastante extraña, la pareja no tarda en entablar relación con sus compañeros de compartimiento, Ian y Abby. Sus caminos se cruzarán con el del inspector Grinko, que investiga el asesinato de un narcotraficante...

Roy (Woody Harrelson) and Jessie (Emily Mortimer) have just finished working with children overseas as part of a church project. Before flying back to the States, they decide to travel from Beijing to Moscow on the Trans-Siberian Express train, where they meet two fellow travelers, the handsome Carlos (Eduardo Noriega) and young Abby (Kate Mara). The couples bond, but gradually Jessie becomes worried that her new friends are involved in drug trafficking.
